A.5. O.A.A.C. 1866. Macon April 13th 1866 Anonymous [[stamp]] THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF THE UNITED STATES [[/stamp]] Reports a case of murder where the murderer is allowed to go unpunished See L.B. April 28 - Recd back April 25" 1866 Recd OAAC April 20th 1866 Office. AA Commr - Bureau RF&AL Augusta Ga April 21st 1866. Respectfully referred to Capt Hill, A.A.S.A Commr. Macon, Ga, for investigation and report. - This paper to be returned with report. By command of Brig Genl. Tillson (Sgd) W.W. Deane Capt & A.A.G. Office A.S.A. Comr, Bureau RF&AL Macon Ga Apl 23rd 1866 Extract Thos. Knight, Jailor, at this place, shot a negro near Jail and the negro died next day. $1500 bonds were taken by Bvt Lt Col. Lambert. for his appearance, and the bonds with all evidence taken, turned over to the clerk of the Superior Court of this Co (sgd) N. Sellers Hill Capt & AASA Com BRF&AL Bureau RF&AL Office A.A. Commr of Ga Augusta Ga April 26" / 66 Respectfully forwarded. The action of the Bvt Lt Col Lambert, in this case, was unknown and unapproved at this office. It is reported that Knight the Jailor, has been a convict himself, is a desperate character, and has already killed two men. If this be true, he is evidently unfit for the position of Jailor, which he still holds. The undersigned respectfully requests that the Maj Genl Comr Dept of Ga. will cause the matter to be investigated, and such action taken as justice may require.
