Humphreys of Miss. enclosing petition from citizens of Hazelhurst Copiah County, also letter from Mr. Webb, relative to a Public meeting in Liberty Amite Co., and states that he has many letters from citizens from that part of the state on the subject of the petitions, and that a small garrison stationed at Brookhaven under a judicious officer would allay much apprehension inducing the freedmen to quick industry, & that if relief is not afforded the freedmen, much suffering if not, outbreaks will arise, & asks assistance in this matter in order it may reach the ear of Congress &c Endorsed by Genl E.O.C. Ord. stating that he has received reports, letters and petitions for troops and applications from ladies for food who are in danger of starving and expressing fears not that the Freedmen are desiring of conflict with the whites, but for want of food they will be driven to plunder in a wholesale way & that the whites may be compelled to save what little they have to resort to arms Jany 6th Returned E.B. p173 Vol 4. | | Jany 6th 1868 #11 | Alvord J.W.
