I dictate from Silver Hill in New Canaan, where I have come to achieve sobriety. As you know, I would have preferred moderation, but that's not for me; being moderate has never been either a goal of a virtue. Even as a philosophy student I quarreled with the Platonist's "moderation in all things" -- as it sounded too close to mediocrity, and in the middle. Easing off was painless and remains so. The staff is both gentle and numerous -- about four for each adult patient. The landscape is large and mature, so in few spare moments I work on leafless tree identification. Also on exciting new Thai Silk accessories for MoMA and Estee Lauder's Prescriptives -- color work in this brilliant winter sun is especially fulfilling. This kind of living situation is new, as we see and hear the whole person, not a facade. And from all walks, including addicts and criminals, also (somewhat separated) children as young as 9. How fortunate I have been; also in my circle of friends and colleagues! I am humbled, of course, but less so, really, then when indulging. I expect new powers in the search for clarity... and, yes, moderation in all other things. Onward! Jack (dictated March 7, 1993) Silver Hill Hospital 208 Valley Road Canaan, CT 06840
