R.F.D. = Rural Free Delivery It is *not* R.F.O., especially since in the next line the writer mentions his (albeit incorrect) translation of RFD. u with line over it = u this was to distinguish it from the letter in handwritten documents The saucer-shape helps distinguish from "n"; the hat can be a hastily written umlaut.
