Says that the Genl. said in a conversation with him on the subject at the Capital, "I find that the money I had expected from Barry Farm cannot come from that source for Raleigh. As soon as you are ready let me know and I will give orders for $6000. from another fund" Upon this they have depended; wish to go forward with the work in Sept. and cannot get along at all without the whole amount | | Aug 29th #188 | Alvord J.W. Forwards letter of Marthal Schofield of Darby Pa. stating that she gave land in Aiken, S.C. for freedmen's Schools; that the Bureau furnished funds for constructing a building according to contract and specifications agreed upon by Maj. Deane; that the house has not been placed upon the land given; has not been build and furnished according to agreement &c. Requests that the Bureau withhold payment till the whole contract is fullfilled. With recommendation that the papers be referred to Maj. Deane and the last payment be stopped until the terms of the contract are complied with. | | Sept 7th #192 * | Am. Miss. Association C.H. Howard Sec'y. Sept 18th Referred to C.Q.M. to know whether freedmens building has been transferred to trustees | Chicago Ills. Sept 5th 1870. Requests suspension of turning over of school house at Camden, Ark, to the Board of Trustees, States that the Camden Board owes the A.M.A. $300 and their only hold on them is by the house; that Mr. Colby was ordered to evict them from and he has proceeded legally to do so; the case comes up in Oct term and thinks it will be decided favorably to us." That Mr. Colby and Thos. Smith, State Supt. represent the importance of retaining all buildings in the hands of the Government until after the election, as they might fall into the hands of those unfriendly to the education of the blacks, &c &c. | | Sept 7th #193 | Am. Sept 8th Returned with the information that Col Henry Page D.O. at Little Rock has been directed, upon completion of the building to inspect the conditions if found satisfactory to certify the vouchers, Full instructions have been sent Mr Henderson by the C.D.O. | Chicago Ills. Sept 5th 1870. State that E.E. Henderson, Circ't Supt. Public Schools, who has acted for am. M. Association at Fayetteville, Ark, writes that the house is nearly completed and that the contractors want their pay. Inquires if the Comr. will accept his inspection of the work and send him money and vouchers, or how will the business be completed |
