Gregory to acknowledge the receipt of your petition for the appointment of E. Beauchamp and to say that untill some provision is made for their payment no more Agents will be appointed. W Howard of Bosque Co. is an authorized Agent of this Bureau and all his official acts will be recognized wheither done in Bosque Co. or not- I am. Very Respectfully Your Obedt Servt Wm H Sinclair A. A. Gen. Headquarters Bureau R. F. and A.L. State of Texas. Galveston, March 12th 1866. 232 Prato, Lieut. Col. O. E. Indianola Texas 0./462 I am directed by Gen. Gregory to acknowledge the receipt of your letter bearing date March 9th 1866, and to say, that you are not authorized unless regularly detailed, to act as an agent of the Freedman's Bureau. The Gen. hopes to be able to lend an Officer to take charge of the Freedmen's Bureau. The Genl hopes to be able to send an Officer to take charge of the freedmen's affairs in your section ere long, and in the meantime he hopes as an Officer of the Government and having the good of the freedpeople at heart you will continue as you have heretofore. Continue to protect them in their rights of person and property. Thanking you for your kind letter and offer and for the interest you have taken in the Freedmen's affairs. Liberty, Texas, 0./281 Sir, I am directed by Gen. Gregory to acknowledge the receipt of your letter dated Feb'y 28th 1866, and to say that the Government will not furnish transportation in the cases you mention. In regard to the two cases where contracts were violated. he directs me to say that force will not be used to compell freedmen to keep their Contracts. If by your advice and by showing them the wrong they committ in violating their Contracts you cannot induce them to return and fulfill them. then they can be proceeded against only in the same manner as would a White man under similar circumstances. I am directed by Genl Gregory to acknowledge the receipt of your letter bearing date Feb'y 26th 1866. and to say that at present there are no funds provided for the payment of Citizens acting as agents of this Bureau.
