Bureau Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands, Headquarters Ass't Commissioner, District Columbia, Washington, October 9th 1867. Bvt. Brig. Genl. C.H. Howard, Asst. Comr. D.C. Bureau R.F.& A.L. General: About 400 volumes per month have been drawn from the Free Library. Cor. of 5th and E Sts. Washington, D.C. by the Colored children and adults of this District, during the past year. In my trips through your District, since the first of July, I have learned of a few Schools which have been in operation, the past year, but never reported to this Bureau. - as follows. Parkersburg, - West Va. 1 School, 50 Scholars, 1 Teacher. (White) Tinkersville, West Va. 1 School, 30 Scholars, 1 Teacher. (Colored) Chapel Furnace West Va. 1 School, 40 Scholars, 1 Teacher. (Colored) Oake's Furnace West Va. 1 School, 30 Scholars, 1 Teacher. (Colored) Cannel's Creek West Va. 1 School, 21 Scholars, 1 Teacher. (Colored) Charleston. West Va. 2 School, 120 Scholars. 2 Teacher. (White & Colored) Buffalo West Va. 1 School, 30 Scholars. 1 Teacher. (Colored) Total - 8 Schools 321 Scholars. 8 Teachers.
