War Dept Bureau &c /265 Bureau R F & A L Office Supt 3d Dist of Va Richmond Va June 27th/66 Respectfully forwarded to the Asst Comr Va with the following statement - This case was decided in April 1865. by Capt Stoops Pro Mar of Fluvanna Co in favor of Rebecca Scott. she producing witnesses to prove. the property was purchased before the war by the said Rebecca Scott and she holding a receipt for the same, The case was again brought up in July 1865. before Maj Croft Chief of Police of this City, and the same decision given by him, and approved by Capt Ellsworth Asst Pro Mar of the Dist of Henrico. Again in Nov 1865 the case was tried in the Freedmens Court of this District and decision given that Woodson should have the use of the boat and mule by paying Rebecca Scott $25.00/- pr month. and in case he failed of paying this am't the property should be turned over to Rebecca Scott, and Woodson have no farther claim on said boat & mule, It having been proven that Woodson failed for five consecutive months of paying the said amount, the court sustained its decision by turning the property over to the said Rebecca. An appeal was then taken to the Supt 3d District Va and the action of the Court sustained by him. This Woodson has several women whom he supports and lives with, and refuses to cohabit with or support his lawful wife and children Sg'd John. A. McDonnell (over)
