May 13/68 Desires information as to the ability and willingness of Aaron & Enos Husbands to support their brother Wm Husband who is now at Montgomery if transportation is furnished him to Salisbury, NC. May 18. 25 * | Hawley Geo. S. Agent. Filed | Franklin NC. May 1st/"8 States that there are 14 Orphan Children among the Cherokee Indians who are very destitute and requests such aid as the Asst. Comr. may grant them. May 15 26 * | Hillebrant, Hugo Agent. Filed | Greensboro NC May 15/68 States that since the last election it seems to him that it is the determination of landowners in his sub. Dist to bring the Freedmen to the verge of starvation & to defraud them out of their share in the coming crop. Requests that the matter be thoroughly considered & some means be used to remedy the evil. May 26 27 * | Hawley Geo. S. Agent. May 26. Retd. who will investigate the case. 20th June 1868. Recd back. filed | Franklin, NC. May 20/68 Reports that a number of citizens of Jackson Co. on April 28th took from the Jail at Webster a freedman who had been confined on charge of stealing, and beat him to such an extent that he has not been heard from since and it is not known whether he is alive or not. F. Agent. May 27. Refd to Bvt. Brig. Gen. H. B. [[Clilg?]] | Lexington NC. May 23/68 Forwards facts from Wiley Kent. The prosecution is on account of the complainants of voting the Republican Ticket. Wm Pickler struck and knocked down Hendersen Smith at his own house and that he has been informed that the Justices of the Peace will not give him any warrant. He has no doubt from observations and the numerous complaints made at his office from his [[^Davie]] Co that the freedmen are much oppressed. June 1 29 | Hay, Thos. H. Lieut A.S.A. Comr. June 1st Refd. to Col. Stephan Moore for collection | Hillsboro, NC. May 30/68 Encloses an account of Mary Durham, Cold. against Wm. Ball of New Bern, NC. Requests that the account be forwarded to this Agent at New Bern, NC. for collection. June 2 30 | Hillebrant, Hugo Agent. June 2. Fowd. to Gen. Howard for his decision and information. EBp53. | Greensboro, NC. May 30/68 States that it frequently occurs in settling cases for freedmen for services rendered, the employers refuse to pay after adjudication to obtain the money.
