[[preprinted]] 6 [[/preprinted]] April 16, 1898. J Puppis X 6144 shows a line bet. 4712 & 4649, but not the same line as is seen in tau Canis Majoris and which is called "dark 4688" in circular. The "dark 4688" is nearer 4712 This line is " 4649. The ^[[1pr.]] plate of epsilon Orionis is so hazy that this line is not well seen. It [[strikethrough]] may be [[/strikethrough]] is 4675. This spectrum seems nearer like that of gamma Arae than like any other. However the line 4089 is more intense here. That line is notably weak in gamma Arae even a little weaker than in beta Centauri whereas the other Orion lines seem more like those in epsilon Orionis. These two stars differ from delta and zeta Orionis in not having line 4685 present. In both stars 4675 is seen. [[end page]] [[start page]] [[preprinted]] 7 [[/preprinted]] [[underline]] April 18, 1898 [[/underline]] beta Cent X 7911 Lines broad Line 4679.9 more intense than in epsilon Or. In epsilon Or. this line is very faint. In beta Cent. it is broad and ill-defined, but not nearly as well-marked as [[strikethrough]] 4685 [[/strikethrough]] 4712. 4685.4 appears to be absent in beta Cent. As this line seems to connect epsilon Orionis with the stars like zeta Puppis and Type V, it is interesting to note its absence or extreme faintness on the group of following epsilon Orionis. It makes a sensible element of division between the two groups. 4675.3 { 4661.7 { same inten. as in epsilon Or. 4649.2 is [[strikethrough]] several [[/strikethrough]] 3 tenths less intense than in epsilon Or. 4641.1 " 2 " more " and these two lines form a more conspicuous pair than in epsilon Or.
Notes on Transcribing this page (optional)
Similar unknown words are transcribed the same (ie- J Puppis, E Orionis, J Arae, etc...) throughout the document. Perhaps some are Proper Nouns and include mathematical/scientific symbols?
This section can be used to communicate any questions or concerns to Smithsonian staff, as well as other volunteers, about this transcription. Do not use to transcribe extraneous notes made by collector or other institutions.
