Washington May 13. 1846 Dear Sir, [[stamped]] FEINBERG [[/stamped]] I have just rec'd your letter, and would aid you with great pleasure, if in my power. There is no justification to increase the number of the Regular officers, only the men; & [[?carefully]] by raising a Regiment of Mounted Riflemen, what I [[?am sure I can arrange]] and be [[oft?]] a guarantee and assurance from the State. The volunteers called into Service will be allowed the selection of their own officers. I am, dear sir [[stamped]] ARCHIVES OF AMERICAN ART [[/stamped]] Truly yours Sam Cole Mr. H. H. [[Inalain?]]
