This picture was painted for the Prix de Rome in 1783. Dissatisfied with its progress the artist himself cut the canvas. Although he could not be awarded the prize, the A cademy recognised his merit by not awarding it to any other artist that year. The picture passed to Drouais' descendants for whom it was restored in 1825.
