GREUZE, Jean Baptiste Camille     1725-1805

[[underlined]]La Dormeuse[[/underline]]    CA 714
20-1/4 x 25-3/4. Panel

The picture belonged to M. Lacaze, the celebrated amateur, who left the paintings which belonged to him at his death to the Louvre, where they now hang as a special collection. He was one of the collectors who helped to bring about an appreciation of Fragonard, Greuze, Boucher and Watteau, for Paris was then swayed by David and the classical school. Lacaze was one of the first to give them their proper rank in the estimation of the amateurs.

COLLECTIONS: Lacaze;
Baron de Beurnonville.
