April 13th., 1938.

Dear Carl:

From the information given me by Ederheimer, I understand that the AGNOLO GADDI, "Betrothal of the Virgin" (Sposalizio), comes from the Benson Collection, in which catalogue it is reproduced. Should you have this book would you mind having a photostat made of that particular page, for our files?

I have also been given a certificate written by Bode on the 26th. of March, 1928, in which he writes that he considers this Predella as an original, true work by Agnolo Gaddi, of his later period. I am keeping this in our files.

I understand this painting, purchased by Duveen Brothers, as part of the Benson Collection, passed through the hands of Arnold Seligmann before being acquired by Ederheimer.

The "Legend of St. Barbara" came originally from the collection of Lord Ellenborough - which was sold at Christies. The "Jahrbuck fur Kunstwissenschaft,Herausgegeben von Ernst Gall, l. Helft, 1924", in an article on the "Meister der Barbaralegende", written by Dr. Max J. Friedlander, states that the Ellenborough auction took place on April 3, 1914, at Christie's, this painting being No. 108, and was purchased by Colnaghi & Co. The painting is fully reproduced in the article and though I have not read it, yet I understand that the drawing for one part of the painting is in the Louvre Museum and the other part in the Morgan Library.

Ederheimer states that he bought the painting from Goudstikker in 1928. It was exhibited at the "Dallas Centennial Exposition" 1936.

At your request I am sending you six photographs of each painting, with the bill for same.

With best regards,

Yours very sincerely,
