THE YOUNG GENERATION ON THE LAND. In the 17 Southern States during the year 1915 only 58 percent of the Negro children between 6 and 14 were enrolled in school. By the school year 1939-40, some 85.9 percent of the children between 5 and 17--a much wider age range--were regularly in attendance. There were 2,174,260 in elementary school and 254,580 in high school. The number of youngsters in high school has more than doubled in 10 years.
