The city is the glitter of Lenox Avenue in Harlem and the neon lights of State Street in Chicago. It is Beale Street and Central Avenue. It is the Armstrong Technical High School with its 1,300 students and the Abyssinian Baptist Church with its 13,000 members. It is the Regal Theatre and the Savoy Ballroom. But it is also the grim tenement with its crumbling wood and stone, the overpopulated lodging house and high rents, the back street and the long ride to and from work.
