the Dutch and the Swiss. What great scientific achievement has come out of France in the last 30 or 40 years? French science went to sleep with the passing of Pasteur and Madame Curie. French engineering skill produced the belated airplane, the Caravelle, certainly not the best in the world. [[underlined]] Where is modern French music, [[/underlined]] painting, sculpture, poetry, fiction, drama, ballet, certainly not the best in the world by any means. Outside of Bloom, Schumann, and a few others, who are the great French statesmen of this century? Most of them were unable to unify and lead their own people who have demonstrated they can only be governed as opposed to governing themselves. In war, too, the modern French record is less than exalted. Even in the area of individual conduct and human behavior, the French need some lessons from the Spaniards, the Italians, the Dutch, the Scandinavians and the British. So, somebody could make a case out of the proposition that the French summons to greatness is a fantasy."
