^[[255]] For Prize Contest No man gets far in life unless he has some dream, apart and aside from his business. With me, Burpee's seeds furnish that apparently necessary dream. When the rush of the holiday season is over and the cold days of January arrive, comes also Burpee ^[[']] s seed catalogue and the pleasant hours studying its pages-planning what to plant and how to arrange the garden plot. Then follow the warm Spring days, the planting of the seeds, watching for them to burst from their beds and eventually their development into appetizing vegetables or beautiful flowers. Everyone who has the spirit of gardening in his blood knows the feeling. Material for dreams is supplied-dreams above the hard knocks and [[strikethrough]]a[[/strikethrough]] sordidness of business life. Gardening, to me, means keeping mentally alive, young in spirit, courageous to meet the future. That is what Burpee's seeds and my garden are to me-a never drying spring for mental rejuvenation. Were it not for the joy of anticipation and the satisfaction of realization I derive from my garden, I fear I might not have the stamina to courageously meet the future. Gardening promotes mental acuteness and a satisfaction with life.
