from Bachstitz,but are all of fine quality. Rembrandt,El Greco,van Cleve-the one we saw at Sabin's-Hals,Hobbema and several little Dutch masters of fine quality. 

Schaeffer apparently has had very little success with his shop here,from what I was told;but I have not seen it. Later I am going to see Mrs.Fisher;but I do not know whether Newhouse is on the California scene or not,or Nesi. But I shall hear,I suppose,what has been going on,when I see McKinney and Poland.

The summer has slipped away pleasantly,mostly in Colorado,then to the Grand Canyon,Bryce,Zion,Boulder Dam and the Yosemite and the Coast. As Santayana said:"To the West of the Rockies lies a garden;to the East a kitchen garden". I would love to tarry here through the Autumn;but I must be back in New York by the first of October,to settle into my new little home and to see whether I can earn a few commissions to revive my badly collapsed finances. To tell the truth,I am rather optimistic;for I have found,both in Colorado Springs and here,that there is a chance of starting museum collections. In Colorado Springs,I lunched with Mrs.Penrose,who showed me some lovely French furniture and great lustres,bought in the Palais Sagan days.I praised them to the skies and she was very pleased.I think that
