June 4. Tried to rain but failed. Killed a Melenerpes f. bairdi, & a Painted Redstart, both new to me.
 
Hunted & made skins as usual, did not go far from camp. Saw 2 Deer & shot at one. Found Panther tracks in my yesterdays tracks & one within 30 feet of my door.

" [[ditto for: June]] 5 Hunted in morning, then made skins, cleaned gun & loaded shells. Packed the skins to carry down to Oracle.

Have been 8 days alone on the mountains but not a bit lonesome.

Had a lively thunder shower & hail. My camp leaks & things got damp.
