Got back at 1 P.M. & skinned till dark. "[[ditto for: Oct.]] 20. Went to traps as soon as light & took them up. Caught a Neotoma & Hesperomys & shot a Lepus sylvaticus. Came back & worked till noon skinning & stuffing skins of yesterdays work. Went to town afternoon & got my auxilliary shot barrel & boxes for packing specimens. Got back at 3:30 & worked at Coyote skin & fat Porcupine till 10 P.M., then wrote. A cool, clear day, windy in evening. "[[ditto for: Oct.]] 21. Sunday. clear & cold. Read some, wrote letters, & talked with Ferd Stephens for about 2 hours. Gave him a skin of Arvicola for a pattern & some advice. He may make a naturalist yet. Had a Porcupine boiled for dinner.
