Followed the valley all the way to Marfa A little snow on Mt. Blanca & the Eagle Mts. The valley is grassy & small brush & yuccas in places, no water & not much stock. Prairie Dogs numerous all along. Saw one Geococcyx. Saw 7 antelope near Marfa. Clear & sunshiny but cold all day. Staid at Marfa 30 minutes & took the stage for Ft. Davis. - 22 miles N.E. Reached there at 7:30, after dark. Had a cold ride after a pair of little Mules, Saw Prairie Dogs & a lot of Antelope tracks. " [[ditto for: Dec.]] 31 Got a pony & started up the mountains to find a place to stay. Followed up the Limpia Creek about 14 miles to Mr. Finleys Ranch & concluded to stay there. It is near the pine timber & there are evergreen oaks & cedars & PiƱon pines all around. The country is rough & rocky.
