Whereas the big picture is a completely finished work, this one is also, but in a different sense, for the yellow background which forms the base of the picture is merely the panel showing through - all the more remarkable in revealing Seurat's technique. This little picture actually has the force and greatness of the major version. SEURAT had many studies for this picture for which a few drawings are extant.
