My dear Mr. Cunningham.

Many thanks for your letter of December 26th, which I just received. I was very much interested of course in the clipping which you sent me.

I do not know exactly what you mean with your questions :-
"Were we occupying our time to the BEST advantage ? "

I told you at the time when we were in the house that if that man was so rich, he could be interested in something very big right away, and something that would appeal to his vanity and to his pride.
It might be much easier to sell him something for $40,000 than something for $4,000.

Do you want me to write him a letter, or do you want me to write you a letter which you could show him, in which for instance I would tell you that I thought so wonderful for a man to give 3 Million dollars, and that I hope that some day he will realize that it would be his duty to his Country to create a Collection of Works of Art, which would make his name live, and which will be something important as regards the Artistic education of the people of Washington, who need it very badly. What Mr. Mellon has done for instance with Pictures could be done with Works of Art.
