April 30. Got up at 4:30 & went to my traps, caught a large, dark Geomys, nothing else. Left Chadron at 6:30 A.M.
A range of hills with rocky, pine covered summits ran a few miles south of Chadron & in a N.W. direction. The R.R. follows allong the N. side of them until they curve more to the N. & we pass through a gap at Ft. Robinson. From there they extend away to the north. Seems to be a barrier reef of the Black Hills.
They are of a limey sandstone, are covered with Pinus p. scopulorum.
The White River is a small creek at Chadron & we follow its valley to Crawford.
The valley is grassy & fertile & there are lots of good farms.
Cross the B.&M. R.R. at Crawford.
Pocket Gopher hills were numerous on the sandy land passed over yesterday, but are rather scarce on the clay soil of todays route. Andrews - leave the hills & enter rolling prairie, grassy & some farms.
Van Tassell - a little creek, grassy valleys & bare rocks on ridges.
Just before reaching Lusk Artemsia cana & A. frigida become common.
The soil is dryer & more barren.
Some Mines near Lusk & red paint beds.
