May 17 Reached [[underlined]] Carter [[/underlined]] station at 6 oclock in morning & had to wait till 11:30 for the stage to [[underlined]] Ft. Bridger [[/underlined]] [[insertion in red]] Wyo. [[/insertion in red]]
Rode about 15 miles across bare sage-brush country to the Ft. & then five miles farther to [[underlined]] Mrs Hewitts Ranch [[/underlined]]* [[underlined]] on Smiths Fork [[/underlined]]
The streams are very high & the Uintah Mts. covered to the base with snow.
Grass is green & good along its streams.
A cold & windy day.
Reached the ranch at about 5 P.M.
Most of the flowers along the road are new to e.

" [[Ditto for: May]] 19 Got to work early & tramped over a lot of ground but did not accomplish much.
Set traps or gophers & mice, shot a Tamias 4vittatus & caught 2 Arvicolas riparius, or like it. & a Spermophilus [[strikethrough]] Townsendi [[/strikethrough]] armatus. Dont find much signs of mammal life. Saw one young Cottontail.
Spizella arenacea are common. Fell in the ditch & got wet. The creek is very high & runs in half a dozen channels. Warm & pleasant.
