Wanted to get into the mountains on one side or other of the valley but could not hear of a place where there was water. Came close to a big point on the East side, that was high & rocky & covered with cedar & pine. but no place to get water near it. Then we crossed to the West side of valley near to cedar covered mountains but could find no water in them. Camped at 4 P.M. on west side of river, not far from base of Mts.
Came [[strikethrough]] 32 [[/strikethrough]] [[insertion]] 19 [[/insertion]] miles. Rodometer [[insertion]] Made a mistake in reading rodometer. [[/insertion]] registered [[strikethrough]] 12884 [[/strikethrough]] revolutions. Road pretty good, smooth but dust deep most of way. Mostly level. Came about half a mile out of our way on an old road. Dipodops, Hesperomys, Perognathus, Tamias, & Jack Rabbit tracks numerous all along valley. Henry saw a little gray Spermophile, but it got into sagebrush & escaped. It was far from water & we could not camp near there.
Just before camping I shot 2 Ampelis garrullus (?) Northern Wax wings - from a flock of 8 that were feeding on rose haws.
Set 15 traps before dark. Not a very good place, sheep have tramped all around.
Warmer than usual. Froze quite hard in morning.
Valley is 4, or 5 miles wide here.
