[[blank page]] [[end page]] [[start page]] [[underlined] Nov. 29. [[/underlined] Caught 5 Arvicolas & some Hesperomes. Henry caught only Hesperomes. Started early for a hunt over the mountains to the east. Took a long tramp but found nothing of account. Saw lots of Deer tracks but no Deer. No signs of Squirrels or Tamias lateralis. Got back a little past noon. Skinned the Arvicolas & a Carpodacus, set traps for Owls & Coyotes - The warmest day we have had for a long time - hardly froze over night. Finished my report in evening & worked till late - The PiƱons are loaded with cones, most of the nuts have fallen out, but there are still many good ones in the cones & some on the ground - Those in the cones have begun to grow and are not good to eat. The meats have become large & starchy & taste like raw potato - The sprout is large & the coteledens have turned green in the nut. The potato tase may be characteristic of this species. The Indians roast them. Picicorvus & Cyanocephalus seem to like them- also Tamias & Hesperomys. The ground is covered with shells under the trees. [[underlined]] Nov. 30. [[/underlined]] Sunday. Heard a trap chain rattle just before daylight. Got up & found a big Coyote in the No. 3 trap. He was in nice pelage & very fat. Caught a Sorex & Evotormys, or Arvicola. Warm & pleasant.
