Bunch grass is abundant till we get down to the springs then it becomes scarce so we have to take the horses back up the cañon.
Nelson rode down onto edge of Panamint Valley, & set some traps. We both set traps along canon but there seems to be little sign of animal life. The canons & Mts. are very bare on this side. We found a bunch of Mesquite in the cañon at 4550 feet. It is the Screw bean - Peosopis pubescius. A few willows grow about the springs. The water in the springs [[strikethrough]] are [[/strikethrough]] is warm but is fairly good. Only a little water runs over from the springs. In one place the water has run down the road & frozen so we found it difficult to get down.

[[underlined]] Jan. 3 [[/underlined]] Followed down the cañon & across a long slope to the flat sink of Panamint Valley. The sloping side of valley is covered with small stones, baked brown & has very little vegetation. Great patches are just bare stones. Larrhea mex. is scattered all over the valley, except on the flat bottom, & up to 3600 feet on east slope of Argus Mts. much higher on slopes facing south.
