There is a good stream of pure water coming down the cañon to the soda flat. Both kinds of Mesquits grown along the creek up as far as I went - also willows & several small shrubs. The rocky sides of the cañon are bare of vegetation. There is some good grass along the creek. Did not find good places to set traps Only a few Neotoma & Hesperomys signs. Nelson reset his traps in valley south of camp - Windy all night & all day - 42[[degree symbol]] at 7 A.M. 57[[degree symbol]] at 1:30, clear.
[[underlined]] Jan 9. [[/underlined]] Went up Surprise Cañon to my traps got 4 Hesperomys sonoriensis & 5 long tailed Hesperomes. Caught them from 1000 to 1675 feet above our camp which is Dikemans barometer station No. 3. & is near the same altitude as P.O. Spring - 1300 feet - Found where Neotomas live but did not catch any. Set some more traps above the others. Went up to 2425 feet above camp & the barometer came back to camp only 25 feet above where it was on starting. There is a good stream of pure water coming down the cañon to the flats. The cañon is narrow & deep & cut most of the was through solid rocks. In places it is 600 or 800 feet deep, with steep sides.
