Coville found a little Perognathus the size of apache hanging in a cats-claw bush on middle of the valley slope by the road. It was perfectly fresh & is the first of the species we have found. Had evidently been hung up by a Shrike.
Nelson & I worked on specimens till after 12  at night & Colville baked 6 loaves of bread after supper to take on a horseback trip to the Colorado R.

[[underlined]] March 10 [[/underlined]], Got around as early as we could packed up & went 3 miles down to Vegas Ranch & Nelson & Colville took saddle horses & went on down the Vegas Wash to the Colorado R. 25 miles. I stay to work up the Vegas. Mrs. Stuarts ranch takes all the land of any value in the valley.
She has 2000 acres. It is a splendid ranch. They have large orchards & vineyards & large fields of alfalfa & grain.
Their main business is raising cattle.
The peach & Almond trees are loaded with blossoms. Apricots are in blossom.
Made up skins & set traps. Nelson go 3 & I got one Perognathus of a kind not found before on this trip. 42 [[degree symbol]] in morning. Warm day.
