Thomomys , abundant from the summit down to Kern River. Hesperomys big eared, common among rocks at 4600 feet. Lepus sylvaticus, one seen at 4400 - Lepus californicus, common over the divide & down west slope. [[underlined]] July 4, [[/underlined]] Did not get to camp in time last night to set traps, so had nothing to begin on in morning Caught & made up 3 Thomomys, set a lot of traps, killed & made up some birds, among them a pair of Barn Owls. Shot a [[strikethrough]] Vespertillo [[/strikethrough]] Vesperugo fuscus and 2 V. pespercus. A pleasant day. There is plenty of shade & green plants to cover the ground as it does not get so hot. the water of the river is cold & nice, several sodawater springs come out along the river. It is fairly good soda water. [[underlined]] July 5 [[/underlined]], Sunday, Got an arvicola, a Sorex, a Skunk, & a lot of Hesperomes - Dr. Fisher caught a big spinescent Perognathus that I never saw before. A warm day but pleasant.
