Were on oak, pine, & brush covered hills from edge of Walker Basin till we got down to 1700 feet on the S. slope where oaks, pine and brush stop. below that is bare, smoothe hills and valley.
Dipodops holes and tracks became abundant at 1700 feet and down to bottom of valley. none above.
Spermophilus beecheyi abundant all along.
No Tamias seen.
Near the top of the range crossed we saw a [[underlined]] California Vulture [[/underlined]] the first we either had seen.
It was an immense bird, was sailing low over an old, dead, stinking cow. was nearly close enough for shot gun range. 

[[underlined]] July 17 [[/underlined]] We were sleepy after half a nights sleep but the horses had no feed, so we got out early and found a place where we could camp & get feed for the stock. Went to the P.O. & got word that Dr. C.H.M. had started for Kanchatka.
Packed & sent our alcoholics, wrote a few letters, got some supplies and then went about a mile W. of town across the river-bridge and camped just beyound. Went out on the dry, smooth plain beyond the ranches & set 80 traps for Perognothus and Depodomys mostly.
A hot day, said to be 105 [[degree symbol]] in town. 
Saw lots of Crows.
Shot an Atalapha [[strikethrough]] noveborencis [[/strikethrough]] teliotis in evening.
