[[blank page]] [[end page]] [[start page]] [[underlined]] July 30 [[/underlined]] Caught 2 Sorex , an Arvicola, 4 Hesperomys leucopus; killed 6 Tamias of a kind just found in the pines, smaller & brighter than those below in oaks, and one Pine Squirrel Shot some birds new to me. Made up skins & started on the road at 2 P.M. Aneroid read 6250 on starting & 7400 at Mineral King at 5 P.M. Camped in gulch 1/4 mile above Mineral King & 50 feet higher. There are lots of campers all along the gulch. It is a pleasant place, cool & a splendid stream of cold water. rushing by. Lots of snow a few hundred feet above & not far to timberline. Popples and willows grow along the stream & firs & Cedars & Pinus murryana We left Pinus ponderosa & struck P. p. jefferyi & passed through P. lambertiana & Sequoia giganea & Libocedrus decurrens. Will include zonal notes in my report & not duplicate them here. Shot an Arctomys & saw more. Zonatricha & Trochitus rufus, are abundant. Set traps along creek. [[underlined]] July 31 [[/underlined]] Caught a Sorex, an Arvicola, 5 Hesperomys leucopus, 4 Tamias, saw a Tamias lateralis & shot it but it got into a hole & was lost. Made up skins, hunted some, Did not set many traps. Watched for Bats in evening but saw none. A clear, pleasant day, 47 [[degree symbol]] at 7 A.M. E. Fork of Kaweah River is about 20 feet wide & 18 in deep at evening, about half as big in morning.
