[[blank page]] [[end page]] [[start page]] Libocedrus decurrens, Quercus kelloggii are common but the plants of the zone below crowd up into them. Quercus chrysolepis, Garryae [[blank]], Rhamnus californicus, Pursia [[blank]], Alnus rhombifolius are common along river and low down on sides of ridges. The river flows south, making a hot trough like valley with high rocky sides. There are conflicting influences. The cold stream carries some things down. The hot, shut in trough carries others up. Pinus murrayana & Abies concolor grow in wet places. Artemisia tridentata grows along the river, but it is in its zone. The first lake we strike looks very deep, is about 30 rods wide and 50 long. Sedges and grass grow around part of it. It lies at one side of the river. There is a good little meadow by it. Willows grow along one side. The second lake is but a mile beyond. It seems to be shallow and dead popples stand over most of it. It is 30 to 40 rods wide and half a mile long. no marsh along the shores. The river flows through it. Dicks ranch consists of a little meadow fenced in so as to keep the grass from sheep and to furnish feed for horses of campers. The meadow is on a little stream at side of river. is a scant 20 acres. A warm day with some thunder clouds. Killed a Sciurus [[passor?]], & 7 Mountain Quail & a Mallard.
