The days work dont seem to amount to much. Clear and pleasant. [[underlined]] Aug. 16 [[/underlined]] Sunday. Nothing in the traps worth saving. A pleasant day. Caught a snake. [[underlined]] Aug. 17 [[/underlined]], Caught a Spilogale and some more Hesperomes. Saw a fresh Bear track in the trail. Packed up and started for Whitney Meadows at 8 A.M. Turned off from Kern River and followed up Whitney Creek crossed it 6 time. Crossed one side stream on a natural bridge of stone, a water deposite of lime. Passed 3 volcano cones, a fine symetrical red one & black one, and a little brownish one. The red cone is lowest down on Whitney Creek and a river of lava has flowed down the gulch 4 or 5 miles. The black cone is a mile farther north where the South Fork of Kern River and Whitney Creek come close together. The Aneroids read 6200 when we started from Kern River at Dicks Ranch.
