He has a Beaver, an Otter, several Mink, Coons, Possums, the skin of a Spilogale from Virginia, Tamias from Virginia & from Canada, Geomys from Elb River, Minn; & from Colorado.  S. tridecemlineatus from Colo. an Arvicola austerus, and A. riparius, Several Sciuropterus from near N. Orleans. One Neotoma from somewhere along the cast of the Gulf [[insertion]] not labeled [[/insertion]] (very peculiar with white to nose & up along sides) Sitomys gossepinus, S. leucopus, S. aurealus from La., Reithrodontomys, Putorius from Canada., Atalopha cinersa, Vesperugo noctoragans from north, 2 Vesperugos & a Nyctonomys from New Orleans & also Atalapha novoborecensis and A. teliotis from N. Orleans. Has 2 Urocyons, Scalops & Scapanus, Sigmodons and Musk Rats.
Turtles are the speciality of Mr. Koln's study. Left New Orleans at 5 P.M. but could get no farther than Terra Bonne tonight From N.O. to Terra Bonne the land is flat & wet & far below the rivers. Great marshes, lagoons, & thick Cypress swamps form the landscape. Large fields of rice and sugarcane grow along the R.R., the rice fields are mostly wet or flooded, the cane fields are a little above water. Vegetable farms extend out quite a distance from New Orleans.
