[[underlined]] Red Lodge [[/underlined]]

[[underlined]] Aug. 16. [[/underlined]] Left Red Lodge and crossed over to Red Lodge Creek and down it to about 15 miles from town. Camped at Olcotts ranch. Wrote till late.

Since we went up the Mts. the grass in the valleys has become brown & dry.

[[underlined]] Aug. 17 [[/underlined]] Crossed over to the Rosebut Cr. and down past the old Crow Agency to Stillwater River & down it to the Yellostone & crossed it to Stillwater. Good Sonoran Zone runs up the valley of Stillwater River about 13 miles from the mouth. Pinus ^[[insertion]] scopelorum [[/insertion]] & Juniperus cover the rocky valley-sides. Thick timber & brush grow along the river & its dark green foliage makes a strong contrast to the yellow, crassy valley & mesas[[strikethrough]]s[[/strikethrough]].

Set traps for Reithrodontomys along river. Camped at edge of town. Paid 1 dollar toll on the bridge.

[[underlined]] Aug. 18 [[/underlined]] Followed up the river to Merrill J & turned up Berry Creek and across to White Beaver Cr & up it to near source & over a divide, or rim & down into Lake Basin & camped at first water. Up White Beaver Creek we are in a great grassy sloping prairie with pine covered hills on both sides, Lots of currants & chokecherries along creek.

Transcription Notes:
"Rosebut Cr." is Rosebud Creek (final letter D, not T), but transcribed as written. He's writing quickly, since the next sentence says "Yellostone" instead of Yellowstone. "Pinus scopelorum" should be scopulorum.
