worked better than I expected she would in the beginning, but from trials afterwards she proved herself not to be suitable for the navigation of the Anadyr. Her boiler seems to be too small for her engines, or in other words she consumes more steam than she makes.

While discharging from the vessel which lay five miles from the point selected for the depot, in each passage of an hours duration, she lost 40 lbs of steam and upwards, and several times, when not running against the wind, she was
obliged to stop on the trip to get up more steam, as there was not sufficient draught.

The morning after entering the bay we launched the scow from the deck of the Gate and commenced discharging loading both scow and steamer.

The point was so far, and so much time was occupied by loading and unloading, that the steamer could make only two trips a day, and that only when the weather was calm.
