directly under my care for greater or less length of time during the Voyage of five months much of the Sickness partook of the nature of colds & Rheumatism and could be in a great measure attributed particularly as for the crew were concerned to their being compelled to Sleep in the Same compartments in which was located the Ships gallery. I would respectfully recommend that the locations of the Galley be changed.

There has been but one case of prolonged Sickness during the Season: namely that of Capt. C.W. Scammon, who, cam under my treament about Sept. 20th. This disease was spasmodic dispepsia aggravated and Superinduced by the constant and inordinate use of Stimulants, which so affected the biliary organs and Fortified the liver that digestion was wholly impaired. Vomiting was almost incessant for weeks the Simplest Farinaceous food was ejected and the System totally depressed. The usual treatment was persistently followed up. Stimulants were gradually taken away and by the most careful treatment and nursing his disease So far yielded that though very weak he was able to sit up in the cabin and even go on deck once for a short time. I considered him Convalescent, but was again called to find a relapse which I at once pronounced to have been caused by a return to the use of Stimulants
