[[underlined]] Fossil [[/underlined]]

Followed up a creek valley a mile & a half and camped 200 feet higher than Fossil. Came 30 miles and all up and down big hills and over mountain ranges.

Found Sonoran Zone species in bottoms of valleys and Transition on tops of ridges, with a few boreal species in cold corners on the highest. From Lone Rock to Fossil we were with scattered Pinus ponderosa & Pseudotsuga much of the time. Juniper is common.

Camas forms solid blue beds of hundreds of acres in extent in Lost Valley. It grows on wet valley bottom and the flower stalks stand as thick as wheat. The fields of it have been fenced & in one we saw a lot of hogs.

Some saw mills in Lost valley.

Could see Condon about 18 miles to the N.W.

The whole country is covered with lava but near Lone Rock & Fossil layers of clay & stratified rock appear below the lava. There are said to be some fossil wood found near Fossil & bones in a gulch west of there.

Spermophilus beldingi were common all the way, a few Tamias luleoventris seen & also S. chrysodeirus. Saw one Pine squirrel in Lost valley.

Transcription Notes:
