July 20. Dr Merriam arrived by the morning stage. Coville wishing to connect with Lieberg at Andrews left us and went down to that point. We got some specimens and made them up and in the late afternoon after getting a supply of provisions we left Harney and travelled toward Burns to find the home of Culps whom Dr Merriam wished to hire to pack on the trip through the Stenis Mts. Travelled until nearly 12 and arrived at a house which we supposed to be Culps. but could raise no one. so camped for the night.

Transcription Notes:
Regarding the transcription of the word "hire" -- written underneath this word is the word "the" with a very tall loop in the h. It bumps up to the word directly above. So I'm pretty sure the third letter in that word is "r". "Hire" makes sense in context of sentence. @nounandverber "Stenis Mts." probably means "Steens Mountains" in Harney County
