[[underlined]] July 23, 1896 [[/underlined]] ^[[Journal of C.H.M.]] Camped at "The Lakes" on Steen Mts. 7100 feet, 22 miles from Diamond - In aspens. A big snowbank comes down to lake. [[line]] Canadien ^[[appears to]] begins about 6500 feet on west slope of Steen Mts. but not well marked or [[underlined]] July 24 [[/underlined]] Camped on summit of Steen Mts. at 9000 feet. Immense quantities of snow. Snowbanks run down to 7000 feet - cold slopes and increase in size up to the summits at 9250 feet. Aspens run up to 8000 feet [[line]] [[underlined]] July 25 [[/underlined]] down to lake at 8100 feet - head of Wild Horse Canyon. Aspens up to 8000 feet E. Transition zone 4800-6500 E. Alvord valley bottom 4000.
