[[underlined]] Steel Swamp to Merrill [[/underlined]]

[[underlined]]  June 7 [[/underlined]] Started early & in about 5 miles passed Jacksons Ranch, pushed through as fast as possible over frequently sandy & rocky roads past Clear Lake and Tule Lake to Merrill. Made about 47 miles & came in late with tired horses.

[[underlined]] June 8 [[/underlined]] Took the complete outfit from Merrill to Klamath Falls and camped at the Warm Springs.

[[underlined]] June 9 [[/underlined]] Waiting for Walter Fisher to come.

[[underlined]] June 10, [[/underlined]] Still waiting.

[[underlined]] June 11 [[/underlined]] Packed up and moved over the ridge to Swan Valley and camped at Mr. Lucine B. Applegates ranch in west side of valley. The top and inner slope of the rim of the valley is covered with a fine forest of Pinus ponderosa, Pseudotsuga, & Libocedrus decurrens down to the bottom The lava rim almost encircles the valley and is over 1000 feet above the bottom where the roads crosses. The bottom of the valley is flat & level & seems to have been the bed of a large lake that is now reduced to a shallow slough on the east side of the basin. The valley is mostly meadow & grass land and forms an immense pasture
