On the west & south a narrow strip of valley lies between the lake shore & the base of the mountains and is cut through by numerous streams and is occupied by a continuous series of ranches. Back of this narrow strip an abrupt escarpment rises 2000 or 3000 feet above the lake. This is called [[underlined]] Winter Ridge. [[/underlined]] It is the edge of a lava plateau and is covered with a good forest of Pinus ponderosa, Pseudotsuga & Pinus murryana. The Pinus ponderosa comes down near the base & covers the foothills. Snow drifts still lie along the east side of the crest of the ridge. Immense springs come out of the base of this ridge and streams cut down the side at frequent intervals. The rock is stratified lava, in a few places alternating with strata pumace. The ridge is the complement of the Warner Range escarpment east of Abert Lake & stands facing it with the valleys between.
