[[underlined]] Summer Lake [[/underlined]]

The strip of valley between Winter Ridge and Summer Lake [[strikethrough]] is [[/strikethrough]] slopes to the east mainly and is so narrow that Transition Zone plants occupy most of the ground. A few Sonoran species occur on dry flats but the moisture & slope exposure seem to counteract the low altitude. Tamias amoenus & tanagers came down to the edge of the lake.

Fruits of sonoran varieties; cherries, peaches, apricotts, plums, nectarines, & apples thrive and are raised in abundance. Cherries are now ripe. This strip furnishes much of the fruit for the neighboring region. Barley, rye & oats are raised to some extent but most of the ranches are devoted to stock & hay for wintering it. Much stock is wintered in the valley. Some tule marshes border the N.W. corner of the lake.

Rain follows Winter Ridge and strikes the ranches so little irrigation is necessary. Six distinct rain storms struck us today on the way up, all following the ridge.

[[underlined]] June 22 [[/underlined]] Left Summer Lake and followed up an open gap to the west into Silver Lake Valley. Followed the lake shore around to the N.E. corner and left it at the U R Ranch and struck across the "desert" in a N.E. direction to Christmas Lake where we camped. Came about 35 miles & camped at 4 P.M. Set a few traps & shot birds.
