[[underlined]] Des Chutes River [[/underlined]]

[[underlined]] June 29 [[/underlined]] Travelled steadily down a gentle grade till we reached the [[strikethrough]] cres [[/strikethrough]] rim of the Des Chutes Canyon at the extreme end of a tongue of the mesa above Sherar Bridge, then descended a well built and evenly graded road along the side of the canyon down 1100 feet to the river, crossed and went 3 miles up the river to White River Falls. Then turned back and climbed the long, graded road to the top of High Ridge up 2400 feet from the river. High Ridge forms the west rim of the canyon and the road goes over nearly the highest place. The Des Chutes Canyon is very crooked & irregular with basaltic sides and bed. The lava is stratified and nearly horizontal. In places sloping masses of talus reach high up the sides, and again the cliffs are [[strikethrough]] near [[/strikethrough]] perpendicular.

The river is a rushing torrent, at present very muddy on account of rains. It is narrow and deep with a solid rock bed. At the bridge it is not over 40 feet wide and flows through a box [[strikethrough]] [[??]] [[/strikethrough]] channel that does not widen at the top 20 feet above the water. A fall [[strikethrough]] or leap [[/strikethrough]] of 10 or 12 feet occurs just above the bridge & Mr. Sherar says there are no larger falls on the river.

Just before Joining the Des Chutes the White River falls is a set of two large and several small falls into the canyon. The two large falls are close together with a large pool between them. From top of upper to bottom of lower these two measure by the aneroid 130. they are about equal in height.
