The valley surrounding Centerville & Goldendale is of the Plains of the Columbia type with swelling ridges clothed with bunchgrass and non shrubby plants, a clay soil overlying lava rock. Much of the land is fenced & cultivated and good wheat and barley grow without irregation. Good orchards of apples, plums & cherries were seen.

No signs of mammal life could be seen along the road, not even Thomomys hills. No holes or tracks of anything.

The usual mounds of lava regions are common.

Aneroid at camp set at 550 feet read on top of ridge 2900, at Centerville 2050, Goldendale 2100, camp 2200.
