[[underlined]] July 10. [[/underlined]] Only a few Peromyscus were found in the traps. No bats secured though a few were seen.

Followed up the river valley 2 or 3 miles and climbed [[strikethrough]] over [[/strikethrough]] up the hill to a tableland about 2000 feet above the river, followed this east for a few miles descended to the bed of Rock Creek at a point a few miles back from and about 200 feet above the Columbia. Followed up Rock Creek 5 or 6 miles and camped at the ranch of Mr. Herman.

The mesa and ridges are steep sided and mostly barren & smoothe. Rock Creek gulch is deep and narrow & rocky bottomed. A small creek runs in the wide, rocky channel A dense growth of Poplars, alders, maples, willows and such brush as Amelanchier, Cretagus, Rose, Cornus, Ribes & etc. grows along the creek.

[[underlined]] July 11. [[/underlined]] Followed up Rock Creek a few miles and turned to the east over a high ridge onto the open plateau, then across north to Dot and a few miles farther north to Cleveland. Camped in Wood Gulch half a mile above the little town of Cleveland and among scattering pine [[strikethrough]] timber and [[/strikethrough]] and oak timber. Maples, Alders, birches, and willows fill the gulch.

A hot day. Came about 15 miles.

Transcription Notes:
"Cretagus" is probably Crataegus (hawthorn), but transcribed as written.
