[[underlined]] June 4 [[/underlined]] Packed specimens to go by mail. Sent 3 boxes and 4 packages. Waited till 4 P.M. for the mail from Austin, then traveled north 5 miles and camped on Meadow Creek where it comes out into Monitor Valley. Camped in open sagebrush valley & set traps.

This has been the first comfortably warm day this trip, though ice formed nearly half an inch thick in the night.

[[underlined]] June 5 [[/underlined]] Bought a new buckboard horse and started north down Monitor Valley, Passed ranches at 5 and 13 miles and kept on to some springs at 27 miles and camped. Followed the west side of valley all the way with good roads & no hills and very little change of level. Monitor Valley averages about 10 miles wide, is generally smoothe with little streams coming part way down the sides. The bottom seems to have no drainage or uniform slope, though, with bare alkaline flats and just south of our camp with an big alkaline slough surrounded with salt grass flats.
